Self-payers have several advantages when it comes to systemic therapy/counselling:

  • Firstly, there are no waiting times as appointments can be scheduled quickly and without the bureaucratic hassle. The waiting period is typically no longer than two weeks.
  • Secondly, the scheduling is tailored to individual needs, with the frequency and duration of sessions being flexible. There are no regulations on the number of sessions or the intervals between them. Appointments are arranged according to the client's specific needs and can occur at irregular intervals. Upon prior agreement, extended sessions of one and a half or two hours can also be arranged.
  • Thirdly, systemic therapy eschews the traditional concept of disorders and diagnoses, considering psychological problems as a result of a disturbed system rather than a pathology or illness of the individual. Therefore, there is no diagnosis recorded with the health insurance provider. This can have financial benefits when obtaining life, disability, or private health insurance, as there are no risk surcharges due to psychotherapy.
  • Finally, self-paying for systemic therapy/counselling can be advantageous for individuals seeking civil service appointments (such as teaching, military, justice, police, and criminal services). Unlike reimbursed psychotherapy covered by insurance, there is no documentation or diagnosis recorded that could be accessed by a medical officer when waiving confidentiality.
